About Brian
Experience
Brian is an award winning high school social studies teacher with over a decade of experience in Georgia public schools. A product of public education himself, he believes the strength of our democracy is tied to our commitment to provide a quality public education for all children and create the common thread by which the fabric of our community is woven.
Childhood experiences helped to shape Brian’s views of the importance of public education. Because his father’s illness left Brian’s mother to raise four children by herself, the public schools played a major role in creating opportunities for her children that she, alone, was unable to provide.
Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Brian enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduation from high school. He worked in military intelligence where, among other accomplishments, he led a team of American and Norwegian military personnel on a NATO exercise above the Arctic Circle.
After his Marine Corps service, Brian worked his way through college with the help of the G.I. Bill, scholarships, and student loans. Upon completing graduate school and with the aid of valuable life experiences, he began his teaching career.
Since his very first year in the classroom, Brian has been an active member of the Georgia Association of Educators, serving in elected positions at various levels—including representing the organization nationally. He believes that educators must be involved in any efforts to reform their profession. His interest in politics springs from the conviction that developing future generations of engaged citizens will require educators—along with parents, business leaders, and politicians—to model the behaviors essential for responsible citizenship.
Education
Brian holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Master of Science degree in sociology from Florida State University. He also received a Juris Doctor degree from Georgia State University’s College of Law and a Master of Public Administration from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
At Home
Brian currently lives in Decatur, Georgia, with his wife of eighteen years, Emmanuelle. They both appreciate long walks in Decatur with their little beagle. Brian is a member of Central Congregational United Church of Christ and enjoys the lively discussions that take place in his Sunday school classes.
